Nova Scotia’s MLA expense fiasco and the burgeoning municipal concerts scandal should remind all of us, again, that secrecy is what gives rein to incompetence and corruption in government.
The province’s auditor general revealed that MLAs were padding their expenses and abusing legislative perquisites. Until then, that all had been kept secret from the people who funded it, the citizens.
The concert subsidy scandal at City Hall also was born in secrecy. Wayne Anstey, acting as the city’s chief administrative officer, and Mayor Peter Kelly arranged secret, inappropriate and possibly illegal payments to promoters for a series of concerts on the North Common.
