As Halifax’s mayor-elect, Mike Savage has a laundry list of must-dos and hope-to-dos, but there is one item he says is staying at the top — downtown revitalization.
“I want small- and medium-sized businesses all over the municipality, but one thing we have seen is many leaving the downtown area, and that’s not self-sustaining. We have to reverse that,” Savage said in an interview Monday.
“If you want to have businesses like photographers, craft shops and bakers then we’re going to have to take a serious look at what incentives we could have to encourage people to be in the downtown and stay there.”
Property-tax rates based solely on assessment values and antiquated, sluggish development processes, Savage said, have forced independent shop owners to steer clear of downtown, and that is a detriment to all of Halifax Regional Municipality.
