Conduct report worries some on council

Halifax council should look inward to try to settle any disputes among members or deal with alleged wrongdoing and not air its dirty laundry in public.

Those are recommendations in a new municipal staff report on a code of conduct for the mayor and regional council. The report is on the agenda for Monday’s meeting of council’s administrative standing committee.

Deputy Mayor Jim Smith (Albro Lake-Harbourview), a member of the committee, said Saturday that self-regulation might be OK sometimes but there could be times when an outside ethics authority is required to rule on conduct matters.
